Keep the Community in your Radio Petition

14 SEPTEMBER 2017 UPDATE:

Success! The Government has announced additional funding support of $12 million will be provided to the community broadcasting sector for to community digital radio, enhanced news and streaming services, and enhanced training. Find out more.

22 JUNE 2017 UPDATE:

A motion was passed in the Senate supporting community radio’s important role in providing a platform for diverse voices in an increasingly consolidated media landscape. Senators Hinch, Ludlam, Xenophon and Lambie moved that the Government should increase funding for community digital radio to $4.5m per annum in 2018/19 and commit to funding at that level on an ongoing basis.

4 MAY 2017 UPDATE:

The community broadcasting sector welcomed an announcement from Minister for Communications Mitch Fifield regarding increase in funding for the community radio sector over the next two years. The additional $6.1m funding is targeted for digital radio ($1.9m in 2017/18 and $2m in 2018/19) and a further $2.2m focused on support for stations affected by the reorganisation of the 803-960 MHz radio frequency band. Find out more.

2016 UPDATES:

In 2016, the Labor Party, the Australian Greens and the Nick Xenophon team announced that they would restore community radio funding if elected. The Keep Community Radio campaign sought support from all parties including the Coalition Government by maintaining funding to keep community radio stations broadcasting on digital radio.

---

The 2016 Federal Budget contained cuts of $1.4 million p.a., funding that was essential to community radio stations' continued broadcasting on digital in 5 capital cities. This put community radio’s standing alongside public and commercial broadcasters is at risk.

The good news is that community radio has great community support and during this election campaign we’ll be speaking up loud and clear and calling for both the Coalition and Labor to restore the funding if they win government.

We passed the petition below on to government to show the community's support.

The below was the message we shared via our petition:

Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten, as a supporter of community radio I’m asking you to reinstate funding to keep community radio on digital if you win government.

Community radio serves so many Australians; from radio reading for people with a print disability to programming in the different languages spoken across our country, to Indigenous broadcasters, faith based stations, regional stations and youth stations.

Please don’t leave community radio behind.

I am a disabled Vietnam Veteran and advocate for suicide prevention sending out positive information to our combat veteran and broader community. I am also a singer/recording artist/international entertainer offering FREE concerts to the veteran and broader community to bring back the happy days for families who have been traumatised by suicide in the family. Keep community radio alive its really the heart of what community is all about. I now wish to learn how to do live streaming so when I am traveling outback regions of Australia, New Zealand, America and Great Britain I believe this is a great way of communicating with the broader community in many cases who are disadvantaged from contact.

Community radio is a great source of local information and entertainment; serving audiences who would otherwise not bother listning to conventional radio broadcasting.

We must fight to keep every station. Unsigned bands are its bread and butter. They work hand in hand in supporting each other. Beautiful!

I think that community radio is amazing in that it makes people feel connected to what is going on on a more personal level in the community around them. Community radio is also educational and puts out information that can genuinely help listeners that might be hard for some to find otherwise. Mostly, I think it is a great ministry to those who are shut-ins, lonely and have physical and mental health issues for whatever reason. Also the music is great, you don’t hear it on commercial stations. In short, community radio is great !!!!

Gawd. To shut down a wonderful station like WOWfm, for me here in Tokyo would be a shame, as I listen online, and it brings my hometown of good old Adelaide closer to me, and up to date on daily matters all the time.

We need Community Radio now more than ever, as the Government attempts to silence alternative voices. You know the first thing this Government did when they won power was axe Deadly Sounds, a brilliant indigenous music show hosted by Rhoda Roberts. It had been going for years. They also took funding away from the Deadlys Awards Night, which showcased indigenous achievement. This was despicable. We must fight for Community Radio because it’s the only way we can get our voices heard.
